The Work of Reclaiming
High-control systems often interfere with the development of self-trust and discernment. Reconstruction is not just about escaping the system; it is the disciplined practice of rebuilding one's internal capacity for self governance.
What we are building
Sovereign Ground is a research and development organization.
Facebook conversations, articles, exercises, and small-group experiences are not separate ventures. They are different parts of one research process.
We observe recurring developmental patterns. We develop language and frameworks that help organize those patterns. We test questions, exercises, and interventions. We study what genuinely helps people become more capable.
Over time, this work will become a structured knowledge system and a set of AI-assisted tools designed to help people and human facilitators recognize patterns, ask better questions, and navigate reconstruction more effectively.
These tools are not intended to replace therapists, coaches, educators, or facilitators. They are intended to amplify human judgment while protecting the agency of the people being served.
The product is not AI.
The product is increased human capacity.
Leaving is not the same as becoming free.
High-control systems do more than teach particular beliefs. They often interfere with the development of the capacities people need to navigate life for themselves.
When every important question has already been answered, obedience replaces judgment. External authority replaces discernment. Belonging becomes dependent on compliance. People learn to distrust their own perceptions, desires, emotions, and conclusions.
Leaving the system removes the external structure, but it does not automatically restore what the structure displaced.
Deconstruction may tell us what no longer works. Reconstruction asks a different question:
What capacities do I need to develop in order to govern my own life wisely?
That is the question Sovereign Ground exists to explore.
Sovereign Ground - A developmental research project for life after high-control systems.
Sovereign Ground exists to help people cultivate the human capacities required to govern their own lives.
We begin with people recovering from high-control religion because that is where our experience and current research are concentrated. But the deeper subject is human development: how people rebuild discernment, agency, self-trust, emotional honesty, healthy boundaries, and the ability to remain in meaningful contact with reality.
Reality gets the final vote
Agency over dependency.
We do not replace one authority with another. Everything we create should help people become increasingly capable of thinking, choosing, discerning, and living without needing Sovereign Ground to govern them.
Our frameworks are maps, not territory. A map is useful only when it matches the ground beneath our feet. We remain willing to revise our understanding when lived experience and evidence require it.
Our Operating Principles
These principles guide our research, writing, facilitation, and product development. They are durable, but they are not sacred. We believe principles should earn our trust by helping us navigate reality more honestly and more effectively. When reality demonstrates that one of our models is incomplete, we revise the model rather than defending it.
Capacity before certainty
Our goal is not to give people a new collection of approved answers. It is to cultivate the capacities that allow them to engage reality honestly, wisely, and courageously.
Honest Witness Before Reconstruction
We will not ask people to move beyond experiences that have not first been honestly acknowledged. Healing begins by restoring reality: naming what happened, recognizing that it mattered, and refusing to minimize genuine harm.
About the founder
Sovereign Ground was founded by Jess MacArthur, a writer and former Church of Christ preacher who spent much of his life inside a high-control religious environment.
Leaving that world did not immediately answer the deeper questions. How do you make decisions without needing external approval or permission? How do you distinguish conscience from conditioning? How do you build identity, boundaries, relationships, and a meaningful life without simply replacing one system of false certainty with another?
Sovereign Ground grew from years of wrestling with those questions, followed by hundreds of conversations with other escapees navigating similar terrain.
Jess’s role is not to provide a new set of teachings. His work is to listen carefully, identify recurring developmental patterns, develop useful frameworks, and help build tools that remain accountable to reality rather than to an imposed system.

Help us improve the map.
Sovereign Ground is an ongoing inquiry. Every thoughtful conversation, lived experience, challenged assumption, and tested practice helps us understand the terrain more accurately.
