Artificial intelligence is already reshaping our world in profound ways, and that transformation is happening at an unprecedented pace. We don't yet know exactly where this revolution will take us. But that uncertainty cannot be an excuse to look away. It is one of the reasons to pay attention.

The development of AI will not honor the hesitation of thoughtful people, nor will it slow down if sceptics decide not to participate. Governments, corporations, investors, and other powerful institutions are already shaping what these technologies become, whose interests they serve, and how their significant risks - and potentially vast benefits - are distributed.

We believe ordinary people have a stake in those decisions too.

​

AI has the potential to put extraordinary capabilities into the hands of individuals: access to knowledge, tools for making sense of complexity, opportunities to create and learn, and forms of assistance that until recently required substantial money, expertise, or institutional access. In that sense, AI has the potential to democratize not only information, but capability.

​

But potential is not destiny.

​

The same technology can concentrate power or distribute it. It can encourage dependence or increase capacity. It can manipulate attention or deepen understanding. It can replace human judgment - or help people exercise that judgment more effectively.

​

Which future we get depends, at least in part, on what we choose to build with it.

​

For Sovereign Ground, simply walking away is not a neutral act. If this technology can be developed and used in ways that strengthen agency, discernment, relationship, creativity, and human flourishing, then we believe we have some responsibility to explore those possibilities.

​

That doesn't require uncritical enthusiasm. Quite the opposite. Engagement means bringing our questions, skepticism, values, boundaries, and judgment with us.

 

Sovereign Ground is therefore choosing to participate.

​

We want to experiment with ways this technology can help people understand themselves without telling them who they are; recognize patterns without surrendering their judgment; and encounter new possibilities without creating a new authority to obey.

​

We don't know exactly where that exploration will lead.

​

But we would rather help shape the tools that are shaping our world than leave that work entirely to those with the most money, power, or incentive to capture our attention.
